Root Calculator

Finding a root is the inverse operation of raising a number to a power. For example, the square root of 9 is 3 because 3² is 9. This calculator can find any root (square, cube, 4th, etc.) of any real number.

Result: 8

How It's Calculated

Finding the nth root of a number `x` is mathematically equivalent to raising `x` to the power of `1/n`.

n√x = x(1/n)

This calculator uses that principle. For example, to find the cube root (³√) of 27, it calculates 27(1/3), which equals 3.

What about roots of negative numbers?

You can find an odd root (cube root, 5th root, etc.) of a negative number. For example, the cube root of -8 is -2. However, finding an even root (square root, 4th root, etc.) of a negative number results in an imaginary number, which this calculator does not handle.
